Yesterday, as we continued to work our way through Exodus we came to the last and final plague. The proud and hard-hearted Pharaoh is absolutely devestated and defeated by the death of his first-born son. As he sends Moses and Aaron and the people of Israel out of Egypt he adds these striking words saying, "be gone, and bless me also!" (Ex. 12:32). This led us to deal with, at some length, the biblical doctrine of repentance. Is Pharaoah's request to be blessed a sign of true repentance? Sadly, as we will continue to see, the answer is no. And what's even more tragic is that many today still mistake their sorrowful emotions for genuine repentance. It is vital that we have a biblical understanding of what repentance is and what it is not. To that end, I mentioned a book by the 18th/19th century Scottish minister, John Colquhoun, called 'Evangelical Repentence'. I have found this book to be extremely helpful and I pray that you will too. It is worthy of your time and careful consideration.
